I love Radiohead. To me, they are the epitome of what a band should be: rocking, enigmatic, moody, experimental and poetic. I eagerly await each album and have never been disappointed since I became a fan 10 years ago. This one came out as a surprise on Wednesday, October 10th as a pay-what-you-want download. You can pay a few cents or $1,000...its up to you!

When I get their album, I like to listen to it all the way through and kind of assess it. This time I thought I would record my thoughts as I did so. Here they are song by song:

15 Step

Instantly, a lot of drums. "How come I end up where I started? How do I end up where I went wrong?" Thom Yorke chants over the bouncy rythym. Great song. Descends into a chaotic outro with fat bass lines and descends further into nonsense. I note how great producer Nigel Goodrich is at capturing the complex moods of almost any Radiohead song.

Bodysnatchers

Nice guitar line with lots of distortion. Thom Yorke voice sounds great. A more "Bends" style song. Yorke's voice here sounds so freaking good! He's has so much more character in his voice...more of blues/rock style on this one. Almost a dance beat energy on this one. Bridge softens up a little. Guitars swoon. Builds...builds. Switchs to jammy outro. They're doing some hardcore rocking. This song would be amazing live.

Nude

Slower one. I sounds like a song on an album called 'In Rainbows.' Thom's singing like a bird over deep bass lines. Really sweet one. Strings on the 3rd verse and the dissonance makes it sound almost like a bridge. The song rises real high and almost ends but unexpectedly falls back down and starts again. They're plays with song structure is always so great.

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi

Another sweet one with a faster tempo. I've heard bad recordings of this one from live shows and always like it. It sounds the same but clearer. Enough to tell how sweet this song is. The music is paced but building slowly. Until some nice rocking out. Then falls into softness and crashes in a strange interlude that sort of evolves into a variation of the verse.

All I Need

Dark and funky. Real low bass lines. "I'm an animal..." Thom Yorke says. I notice that a lot of Radiohead songs are really simple pop songs with just great arrangements and Thom's weird voice. This one's kind of r&b pop song with sinister overtone. Into a crash...lots of symbols and rocking out. Fade out.

Faust Arp

I simple acoustic ditty with great string work. Nice Radiohead-style chord changes. Short but good.

Reckoner

This album has a very intimate feel. This song let's the studio be heard. Lots of different spaces. Kind of a slow rocker. Until a pause...into a strange bridge...then some strings. Weirdness into a tamborine-laden softness. Drums pick up. It almost gets happy...happy for Radiohead. Good song.

House of Cards

Slow guitar rythym. Drums come in with lots of high-hats. "I don't want to be your friend...I just want to be your lover." Great song already, could be the cake-taker. Builds to the chorus comes back in a expectable but great way. Very simple song but really, really nice. This one's my new favorite. Slow and epic!

Jigsaw Falling Into Place

This song is kind of a controlled rocker. Lots of creepy background vocals...intriguing touch. Breaks down into an outro that Coldplay would cream their jeans over.

Videotape

This song was my favorite from the live bootlegs from last summer. Sounds much more intimate here. The song builds with a slow march. A scattered beat stretches out and pans from ear to ear. It's a weird sensation on headphones. Beat begins to fade and it's just piano chords. Feels like it might build but doesn't. Good song.

Overall

Once again, Radiohead has not disappointed me. This album feels more intimate than Kid A or Amnesiac and more personal than Hail to the Thief. The album, like all Radiohead albums, has lots of spaces in it, which is one of things that makes Nigel Godrich's production fit so perfectly with Radiohead's sound. While I'll say that I do love the new album right now, we'll see how it stands up with repeat listens, but...I'm willing to predict that it is as good as anything they've done!
