Pattaya's name came about coming from the march of Phraya Tak (later King Taksin) and his soldiers from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi. This took place ahead of the fall of the original capital to the Burmese invaders in 1767.

For years, Pattaya was a small fishing town.
