Pattaya's name advanced from the march of Phraya Tak (later King Taksin) and his army from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi. This took location before the drop of the previous capital to the Burmese invaders in 1767.

When his armed forces appeared at the area of what is now Pattaya, he came across the troops of Nai Klom, who made an effort to intercept him. When the two rulers met in person, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified fashion and his army's strict discipline. He then surrendered without having a fight. The location the two armies confronted each other was named Thap Phraya, which means the Military of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing out of the southwest to the northeast at the starting of the rainy season. Today the city is officially know as Pattaya.

For centuries, Pattaya was a tiny fishing village. But a change came about on April 26, 1961, when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who were combating in the Vietnam War turned up in Pattaya for relaxation. Coming from this beginning, Pattaya has become a well-known beach resort which now attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. Fishermen's huts along the beach were replaced by resort hotel and shopping malls. Fishing boats were adapted to turn into holiday boats.
